Take the Stairs Privacy Policy

Effective 31 October 2026

Effective: 31 October 2026. Publisher: Web Canaries LLC, [email protected].

Take the Stairs is designed so that your data stays on your iPhone.

What we collect

Nothing. The app has no account, no servers, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. It does not send any of your data to the publisher.

Apple Maps. Maps in the app and address search are provided by Apple's MapKit. When you search for an address, Apple receives the text you type; when a map is on screen (a saved place, a suggested spot, or the map you use to place a pin), Apple receives the map area needed to draw it. This is handled under Apple's privacy policy; the app does not send your history, flights or rides with it.

Purchases. Take the Stairs Pro is an optional subscription sold and billed by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles payment, your Apple Account and your receipt under Apple's privacy policy; the publisher never receives your card or Apple Account details. On your iPhone, the app asks the App Store whether your subscription is active and remembers only the date your access runs until, so Pro features work offline. Apple gives the publisher sales reports that do not identify you. Nothing you track is sent with a purchase.

What the app uses on your device

DataWhyWhere it stays
Flights climbed and steps (Apple Health, read only)Show your history and progressRead from Health on your iPhone; a daily summary is cached in the app
Motion & Fitness (pedometer, altimeter, motion activity, and the iPhone's recorded motion history)Count today's flights, steps and elevator ridesProcessed on your iPhone; the app keeps only short summaries of rides, never raw motion streams
Location (only if you allow it)Save places you choose; send arrival reminders. With Always, iOS tells the app roughly where you spent time (visits), so a ride can be linked to an approximate placeSaved places, recent visits (kept up to 4 days) and ride locations are stored only in the app on your iPhone
Notifications (only if you allow them)Gentle stair reminders, and a note after an elevator rideScheduled locally by iOS
Body weight (only if you enter it)Make the “potential extra kcal” estimate closer to you; without it the app assumes 70 kgStored only in the app on your iPhone; never read from or written to Apple Health

Sharing. Nothing is shared unless you tap Share. A share card shows exactly what will be sent: flights, elevator rides, steps or a badge. Place names are left off unless you turn them on for that card, and location is never included. You choose the app or person through the iOS share sheet.

Health data is never used for advertising or shared. The app never writes to Apple Health.

Your controls

  • iOS Settings → Take the Stairs → Motion & Fitness and Location turn ride counting and visit monitoring off; the app keeps working without them.
  • Settings → Delete location history removes visits and ride locations (saved places stay until you delete them).
  • Settings → Body weight can be turned off at any time; the app then forgets the value.
  • Settings → Export my data creates CSV files of your days, places and elevator rides and opens the share sheet. The files go only where you send them.
  • Settings → Delete all app data removes everything the app stored. Apple Health data is not touched.
  • iOS Settings let you revoke Health, Motion, Location and Notification access at any time.
  • Deleting the app deletes all of its data.
  • Subscriptions are managed and cancelled in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions, or from the app's Settings → Take the Stairs Pro → Manage subscription. Cancelling keeps everything you tracked.

Backups

If you use iCloud or computer backups, iOS may include the app's on-device data in your encrypted device backup. The publisher has no access to it.

Children

The app is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new effective date.
